A house party is in full swing at Lady Hunstanton’s country home. One of the guests, Gerald Arbuthnot, an earnest and upright young man but with limited prospects, is overjoyed when the suave and witty Lord Illingworth offers him employment as his secretary. Shockingly however his mother implores him to refuse this brilliant entrée into sophisticated society…

Ought she to reveal the shameful secret she has kept hidden for 20 years and destroy her beloved son’s happiness forever? How can she persuade Gerald that, contrary to appearances, Lord Illingworth is a “man of no importance”?
